Managing BI Publisher Access

Written by Shwetank Sheel | Nov 19, 2013 10:20:00 AM

Here’s something I ran into recently wherein I didn’t find a quick answer through Google, so I thought I’d share my findings.

The Issue:

On one of my current projects, I wanted to revoke Access to BI Publisher for a particular user group (or Role in the BI 11g parlance). Essentially, I wanted to limit what shows up in the New menu in BI.

Now the Access section of the Manage Privilege page does allow you to control Mobile, Actions, Performance Management and Marketing. However, it does not have any lines for Published Reporting (BI Publisher). In fact, the entire Manage Privilege page does not have any reference to BI Publisher.

The Roles / Security section of BI Publisher management only controls access to BI Publisher data sources, not access to Publisher itself. A quick Google search did not reveal a clear answer (at the time of this post).

The Resolution:

On further investigation, I found that access to BI Publisher features is actually controlled through the Application Policies within the Enterprise Manager security management. I assume that this is an intermediate step and Product Dev will eventually move this into the Manage Privilege section. However, until that happens, this is how we need to manage access to BI Publisher.

I am embedding the relevant permissions for reference below.

Permissions to Create Publisher objects ( defaulted in BIAuthor role )

Permissions to Execute Publisher objects ( defaulted in BIConsumer role )
